Pakistan is definitely paving the way in its growth and developments. This country of approximately 150 million people has a growing middle-class moving towards sophisticated consumption habits. With its main foundation rooted in agriculture, Pakistan's economy has recorded a growth of 4.5 percent against the 2.6 percent negative growth in FY01 within the agriculture sector and it promises a higher growth to come.

Agriculture in Pakistan commands a contribution of more than US$ 17 billion of the country's GDP, 65% of exports, including cotton based products, and well over 50% of total employment.

In the last four years, Pakistan has seen a dynamic increase in the use of agricultural aids such as fertilisers and pesticides. These have contributed to an annual sectored growth of more than 4% in that same time span, which are notably rice, wheat, barley, cotton, maize, sugarcane, sesame, tobacco, fruits, vegetables and livestock. Moreover, Pakistan's fisheries and seafood industry yields more than 665,000 tones of annual catch.

The food industry comprises of more than 1,000 industrial units mainly processing grain and flour, hydrogenated vegetable oil, dairy products, fruit juices and beverages, snack foods, confectionery, tea blending, spices and salt as well as cereals. Wheat, cotton, rice, millet and sugar cane are the major crops. Among fruits: mangoes, oranges, bananas and apples are grown in abundance in different parts of the country.

Pakistan usually looks into imports which include live animals, milk and cream, cheese and curd, maize, preserved and prepared fruits, nuts, vegetables, chocolates, tea, animal food, margarine, beverages, tobacco, animal and vegetable oils and fats, additives, preservatives, fertilisers and pesticides.

Recently, agricultural mechanisation has also played an important role in increasing agricultural production. Mechanisation of agriculture is crucial for achieving self-sufficiency and surpluses in food production through increasing productivity and reducing pre and post harvest losses. Pakistan is making large efforts to modernise its agriculture and make its allied fields more efficient and productive.
